The Rescue

I travel on the Bridgeport Port Jefferson Ferry quite frequently. My mother's family lives in Long Island so I have been taking the ferry before I could walk. One nice summer afternoon I was on the ferry going home from my grandparents house and suddenly the horns blow and the ferry whips around. I get up frantically and look for possibly another boat on the sound that we may be crashing into. Nothing in site. The vessel tips to one side and all I can think about is that it isn't my time. The load speaker comes on and tells the passengers its just a drill. Still a little startled from all the commotion, I begin to calm down and go back to my music I was listening to before the drill.  A boy runs across the upper deck where I was sitting and says there is someone overboard. I grab my camera and run to the other side. Again it was just a drill. The crew members went out on a little raft to practice getting the life vest incase it there was really a person overboard. Even though this wasn't an emergency it was still a rush of adrenaline. I didn't pass up this rare event and captured the rescue drill.  In all my years being a passenger on the ferry I have never experienced this.  Yet another reason why these pictures are so incredible to me.
